Basically this is when artwork is printed in reverse or backwards, onto a carrier sheet ( called transfer paper) the image is then transferred to the t-shirt at a later date using heat and pressure. this is different from Sublimation which I will cover later. There are different kinds of transfers. the ones that get the bad rap are digital or offset printed. artwork is printed from a computer bubble jet printer or offset press using process colours. Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and black. the ink is more like a dye in my opinion. it is translucent and fades really easy. the transfer paper has a clear film that is also transferred onto the garment ( called a window). It is like a big plastic patch :-P this can be trimmed off each sheet prior to pressing if you are into labour. A direct screen print transfer on the other hand does not need the clear film. it is screen printed in reverse. the Plastisol ink has a thicker pigment and is designed to adhere into the garment fabric. The nice part about this is all of the screen printers inks can be used. Like white ink for under base on dark shirts Plus a highlight white, puff and suede inks, Clear gel, Photo-chromatic colour changing ink, neon's, hexachrome's, glow in the dark, crystalline, glitter and metallic ink. Colour foils can be added during the process. Probably even sand and chalkboard effects can be achieved. Direct transfers are great when you are not sure how many shirts you will sell and do not want over runs, or do not have space for lots of stock shirts already printed. |
